Regular Maintenance
It is desirable to exchange water on a regular basis in order to keep aquatic lives healthy. It is also recommended to have fish that eat algae.
If water loses its clarity due to soil contamination...
Soil being clogged with impurities may affect its filtering ability, causing water to become cloudy. It then may lead to fish getting sick. Do the cleaning of soil.
Using an undergravel cleaner that you can buy (or you can easily make one – see Photo 1), siphon water in the aquarium that contains impurities as well as broken granules (see Photo 3). Be careful not to siphon fine granules (adjust vacuum strength by holding the hose – See photo 2).
If water still remains cloudy and/or if water pH will not drop easily, add a small amount of new soil. If there are plants in the aquarium, relocate them out prior to cleaning.
